"The Jam"
Do you have a band? A percussion group? A horn section? A string quartet? A vocal trio?
In other words, a group of musicians you could put together for a sampling session.
The idea goes something like this: create a beathive sample shop specially for the group, then get together in a recording space. If you create a special beathive shop for the group, it's easier to share out the revenue later...
Work using a click track (I like to choose commonly used tempo such as 100, 110, 128 bpm etc) - but sometimes it's good to jam out and slot into a groove before assigning a static tempo to what you are doing.
Then the only limit is your imagination.
I did an unusual version of this with a couple of friends: we called it "synth jam"... every sunday night. We would get all our analog synths, set up a multi-channel recording in Cubase, send out clock, gates etc to the machines and go crazy. We had a few rules, such as "no preset sounds allowed" - but other than that, anything goes. The results? Some crazy noise, tons of fun... and... some fantastic, unique sections - which could then be cut up and made into uploadable samples.
The point is to get some killer raw material - once you have this in your Digital Audio Workstation you can cut it up, add FX, turn it inside out - but the point is it's all original.
And you never know... because this sort of thing can "free you up", you might just come up with your next great song in the process.
I'll be putting up some of the results of the "One Finger Virtuosos" Synth Jams on Beathive - keep an eye out for them!
